Exploring The World’s Omelettes
Everybody loves eggs, they are the food eaten around the world and can be found in the cuisine of every nation. A golden prize contained in creamy white, every time you crack one the mouth waters, they are one of nature’s delights! There are more ways to eat eggs than we can possibly count, but we will now focus on our all time favourite, the amazing omelette!
Every country has its own special method of preparing omelettes, but they all share something in common besides eggs, and that’s frying pans! So, join us on a voyage of discovery as we take a closer look at the wide world of omelettes in all their splendid variety!
French Omelette – To set the stage we will begin with the omelette most westerners call their own, that all-time classic, the French Omelette! Beaten eggs and butter cooked slowly over a low heat while constantly stirring give the dish its famed delicate texture, and creamy interior. Add a pinch of salt if you wish, a variety of fillings such as cheese, mushrooms, and fresh herbs can be used, but it tastes great just plain, too!
Khai Chiao – This amazing Thai-style omelette is a concoction of eggs whisked with soy sauce and fish sauce, giving it a savoury and salty taste. The mix is fried until it’s a rich, golden colour and the edges are crispy. It can certainly be eaten plain, but the Thais often add various combinations of cilantro, spring onions, hot peppers, tomatoes, fermented pork sausage, and radish pickle! Pour on some spicy orange sriracha sauce to create a flavourful meal like no other!
Aussie Bacon and Egg Omelette – This simple, yet sensational tasting version of the omelette is as easy to make as it is delightful to eat! The bacon is cooked in the frying pan until crispy, then beaten eggs are poured in along with cubes of white cheddar cheese and cooked until the whole thing is slightly wobbly. The results are served hot on a plate and then smothered in a rich and tangy tomato sauce!
Greek Omleta – The beaten eggs provide the base for a cornucopia of Mediterranean classic flavours including feta cheese, ripe olives, tomatoes, dill and oregano. Everything is cooked together until the cheese melts and the eggs are solid enough to serve. The fantastic results are simply the stuff of legend!
Japanese Tamagoyaki – Leave it to the Japanese to take omelettes to a new level of technical expertise and eye-catching presentation! Thin layers of beaten eggs seasoned with soy sauce, mirin sweet rice wine, and dashi fish stock are cooked up in a rectangular pan. The layers are then rolled into a tube and served as a component of a bento lunch box or as a maki sushi filling! The creamy eggs and savoury umami flavours, along with the delightful shape make this a far eastern delight.
Down under we love our traditional Australian food, and our omelettes are no exception, but it is fun to travel the world with our taste buds, and we hope you enjoy your home version of the omelette wherever you are!
